MORENA, India (AP) - The room is large and airy, the stone floors clean and cool - a welcome respite from the afternoon sun. Until your eyes take in the horror that it holds. Ten severely malnourished children - nine of them girls.

The starving girls in this hospital ward include a 21-month-old with arms and legs the size of twigs and an emaciated 1-year-old with huge, vacant eyes. Without urgent medical care, most will not live to see their next birthday.

They point to a painful reality revealed in India's most recent census: Despite a booming economy and big cities full of luxury cars and glittering malls, the country is failing its girls.

Early results show India has 914 girls under age 6 for every 1,000 boys. A decade ago, many were horrified when the ratio was 927 to 1,000.

Same situation pervails in China, where modern one-child policy of the authoritarian government and the traditional favoritism towards boys also heavily skew the gender balance in the next generation.

That the two most populous nations on earth might each over the next few decades be tempted to turn a hundred million young men without domestic marriage prospects into cannon fodder before they turn into agents of internal social instability is troubling.

I have a proposed solution. Research to find the "gay gene" and see if the knowledge can be employed to increase the gayness of the surplus male population. That way, instead of explosions of bombs, they'll have an explosion of art, theater and tasteful fashion.

The spread of AIDS or Grid, as it was called, through the gay community in San Francisco and other metropolitan places was predominately blamed on the swinger-like lifestyles of many gays through that time period.

AIDS has spread to amazing proportions in Africa through the heterosexual population to a worse extant than Grid in the US ever could hope to match.

So no, a "problem with disease" is a moot point, as the act of being homosexual doesn't increase chances of a disease, considering heterosexuals in Africa are being decimated to a worse degree.

Now, being dirty, particular lifestyle habits, and all that? That spreads disease. The actual sexual orientation has little significant bearing on disease propagation.

Art, theater, medicine and even science may on the whole benefit, but I suspect fashion will suffer.
