Ska / Punk / Ska-punk
I figured I'd post a thread in tribute to my favorite genres of music, and see if anyone else here listens to any of this stuff. You never know! Here's a couple of examples of what I am talking about.

SKA-PUNK:
Bomb the Music Industry!, my favorite band.

SKA:
Reel Big Fish is a band I got into in junior high, I've harbored a love for them for the longest time... haha

When I think of punk... I have to go to what I consider the penultimate punk band and song. I remember listening to this when it first came out in the mid 80's when I was a teenager.

Fuck yeah!

Crucifucks Hinkley had a Vision Lyrics:
can you believe we're being plagued by religion
still? these christians aren't about to give up.
it's the same countless fools go on and on and on
and on and... closest thing to witches i've ever
seen, let's get out the gas and set them on fire!
aw teach me how to pray good christian. if it
works you'll all be dead. we'll see the secret to
salvation, for me it's when you're dead, you're
dead, you're dead. i can't believe they're
serious, superstitious spastic fools. they live
for everlasting life, and ruin my life here on
earth. they must be so intelligent, to know so
much more than me... i wanna take the president,
chop off his head, and mail it to them in a
garbage bag. hinkley had a vision, hinkley had a
vision.

Oh God, his voice. That's definitely 80s punk for ya. That song kinda...sucks. xD My brother loves that stuff, he's into the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and all sorts of crap bands I've never heard of haha...I don't fault him for it, the kid's got passion. But recently he and I have come to agree on stuff like Bomb the Music Industry!, Reel Big Fish, Andrew jackson Jihad...a lot of new ska-punk stuff. It's really great. haha Here's one of my favorites from BTMI!, it's goign to be on their new album in July.

That isnt punk or ska...thats shit..."cant complain"? Sounds boring as hell. Fucking complain damnit..there is plenty to complain about.

Punk is supposed to be against the machine, against the system, anarchy.

Thats why you think crucifucks sucks. They dont give a shit how they sound..punk is a FEELING, an ATTITUDE, not something that is primped and combed and presented in a neat package. They dont give a shit what you think sounds good..they dont care what they think sounds good..they just do it.

That is punk!

...then again, punk in my day meant anarchy and usually anger.

Apparently punk in your day means working with the system and hoping it gets top ten spots.

No, that song was released for free, on the internet, by a band who releases all their music for free on the internet. They're angry, anarchistic, against the machine but also acknowledging the machine's existence. They're every bit as 'against the system' as other punk bands. that's why ASOB broke up in the first place, because the guys in that band felt like they were becoming to much a part of the 'industry.' Hence the new band, Bomb the Music Industry! Music is changing and punk and ska are not what they used to be. Go up and look at some of the other songs I posted, that is punk today, but it is also as angry as you claim punk is.

Punk may be a feeling and an attitude but it is a genre of music first and foremost. And music is constantly changing. That's fine if you don't like it...the beauty of music is that it can be enjoyed even decades after its creation. Big Grin You might like Against Me! more than Bomb, though...they got me into punk:

Used to (And still do, just not as much) love ska/punk. Reel big fish were by far my favourite band, them, less than jake, streetlight manifesto and capdown were all loves of mine.
