Nietzsche has his value, but I would be careful of lending him the end all of philosophy. That gets close to biblical, and even he might crack you on the head for paying too much attention to his money phrases. Remember, he went quite loony in the end-that is, if he didn't start there.

In to admit, with a moderate amount of embarrassment, I've never read the mans works.

IMHO, Life doesn't have any meaning. It is us, our consciousness who create imaginary meaning to any event in this world.
Lions hunt to eat and feed their cubs. But do it have any meaning? no.
Same with people, they work, pursuing career, etc to live, eat, and create offspring. Does that have any meaning? no.
