Crassus was a scumbag of a businessman...making his money by buying the estates of patricians who were executed by Sulla at rock-bottom prices and by maintaining his own fire brigade which would only put out the fire if the land were sold to him cheaply.

Today he'd be a republicolibertarianazi for sure!

At least when Crassus crassly starts an ill conceived war against Parthia, he had the good grace to personally take the field and get wacked, thus compensating the republic he defrauded by ridding it of himself.

Do we see any republicolibertarianazi personally taking the field in wars they sent lower social castes to die and be mutiliated in? Do we see any of them blown to bits by IEDs? What was Cheney's response to whether he served? Was it "I had higher priorities"?

I agree fully, also Crassus did get molten gold poured down his throat by the Parthians (at least according to Cassius Dio).

The Romans were not a prudish lot by any stretch, they were comfortable being nude in places like gyms or bath. If you look at the sort of art they put on their walls, cups and other things we would consider it pornographic.

They were far more prudish in public than the Greeks. Rather little of their art is as pornocentric as that of the Hellenes. Even with regard to homosexuality (unless you were Maecenas), they tended to keep it behind closed doors far more than did the Spartans.

BTW, I thought Lawless's character was dead, too.

Compared to the Greeks and especially the Spartans I would agree with you. I was meaning compared to our present society. For example I cannot see a political leader today parading with their same sex lovers like the emperor Hadrian did or nudity* to be acceptable in gyms and public swimming pools.

Although we are now not far off the Spartans in one respect, they positively encouraged lesbian relationships.

* There was quite a furore recently in Melbourne about some group having nude swimming nights at a local pool. After "concerned" citizens found photos of these events with children being a part of these nude swimming clubs.

Can't say that I have seen much in the primary sources about Lesbianism, but homosexuality was suggested as having been part of why the army was so effective: The men literally did love each other, and so took greater care to protect one another.

Yeah - but it also guaranteed a civil war between Pompey and Caesar because Crassus was not there to mediate. Crassus' son, Publius, who had distinguished himself as a legate under Caesar in Gaul died with his father. He was a loss.

I will find it interesting how Liam McIntyre who will play Spartacus instead of the late Andy Whitfield will be like in the role. Although Liam was chosen with Andy's permission. Also Lucy Lawless is confirmed to resume her role as Lucretia, which should be good because Lawless makes Lucretia quite an interesting character.

Sad that Andy died, he was the best part of that show Bar Jucy Lawless and John Hannah, though it's good news for NZ, it's being filmed here like the last two and features lot's of Kiwi actors (Like Lawless and Bennet who played Crixus).

I'm a little confused as to how Lawless can be in it, she died in the last episode... Unless they do some Roman Voodo and bring her back, or she survived being run through with a blade...

Anyway, the debut is Jan 2012, so i'll be anticipating the release.
