[split] 0.999... equals 1
RE: [split] 0.999... equals 1
Haha we have to make a leap of faith and just accept that 0.999... = 1. It's the language of math and is defined provably so. Yet a simple counter is that 0.999... is smaller than 1. The onus is on those who state the positive.

That reminds me a great deal of what my brother (PhD in mathematics, ~16-17 years older than me) discussed with me in an hour long phone discussion. Anyway, the fact that there are people who deny that .9^ = 1 (other than myself) is to state that it is not universally agreed upon (one of the earlier points).

Anyway, i think that Adrian and others understand that the burden of proof is on those trying to prove... and so that is what they are doing. But I've yet to see a proof I accept.

An interesting thing to try... get 1 to equal .9^. I thought to show this approach to Adian's first proof, but decided against it. I don't remember why Thinking... hmm...

A number of the 're-proofs' to the disproofs on that page a quite flawed, so far as I can tell. Smile

No leap of Faith is required. Adrian has provided more than one proof of the concept on this thread already.

My favourite being the fact that 0.9r is infinitely long - an infinite length of 0s - it is endless so there can't be anything on the end of it, so there can't be a gap between it and 1.0, so it must be the same number as '1.0' but represented in decimal.

So show us how they converge then Evie. They cannot ever converge is the proof that they can't be the same. It'd be the equivalent to saying 1 = 2. It has to be an approximation - "yeah it's as good as one". None of the proofs demonstrate the fact in pure numbers.

"As you have functions that gradually curve toward a value (say 1), this function will eventually hit every possible value along .9999 repeating. As we know the curve will NEVER hit 1, then .9999 repeating is by necessity less than 1."

It's exactly the same in amount. That's not saying the same as 1=2 because 2 is double 1. Since 0.9r on the other hand, is exactly the same in amount as one, for the reason(s) stated above.

None of those reasons prove it Evie... they all draw on a fallacious link to fractions, for example, assuming 0.3... is one third. Show me where they don't please.

0.3 is not one third. 0.3r is one third.

the "..." denotes infinity Evie

0.3r is not one third, because multiplied by 3 it equals 0.9... & not 1

In base 3, 1 is a third, yeah.

Wrong, in base three 1 would be 1, but thanks for playing. It is called a ternary number system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base-3

I can haz internet point?

No 0.3r X 3 doesn't equal 0.9, 0.3 (without the recurring 'r') X 3=0.9

How can 0.3333333333r = 0.9 when multiplied by 3 when it's got an infinite number of 3s after it? Even ONE extra 3 added to the 0.3 - being 0.33 - would make it over 0.9 when multiplied by 3!
