How about wistful nostalgia as motivation for the death penalty ?
After all, without it, they wouldn't have a religion . .
And maybe for the super faithful, perhaps an unstated wish that if it comes to death by crucifixion, or some other fatal penalty, in order to save faith, or inspire faith, or to do a greater good, yeah, it might come to that.
