As to jor’s measured response
How can you show that what you believe is true? I believe Christianity is true through personal experience, personal observation, reliance on other similar experiences, and studying the Bible.
Why do you believe the bible? Because it supports my personal understanding of my relationship with God and, as a whole, informs my personal morality as an authoritative sounding board daily. I also feel the Bible is the inspired word of God and feel it holds multiple perspectives on the life of Jesus Christ and is composed in a way that is indicative of an overarching plan and is inerrant.
And how do you "know" anything about God and what God has to say on anything in order to claim that you believe Him? I don’t “know” if what I believe or follow is from God, aliens, satan, Thor or Vishnu. I trust that when what I reason to be real, is described in a 2000 year old book that it might have some insights, and have faith and hope that my life here is better for following that compass.
Imho you are just contributing to his point, trying to call him out for alleged generalisations, then explicitly confirming all his accusations, by engaging in namely:
- Having a real low standard/having bad reasons for believing extraordinal claims (personal experience, personal observation, reliance on other similar experiences; I also feel the Bible is)
- Admitting to abandoning any standard for reasonable belief (faith)
- Being engaged in confirmation biases (supports my personal understanding)
- Believing outright falsehoods (is inerrant)
- Immorality or cherry picking, make your choice (informs my personal morality) or
- Being ammoral (informs my personal morality as an authoritative sounding board)
...all of those being clear signs of a lack (or willfully so) of rational thinking and having abandones reason. Then you go and proudly parade them around.
The only redeemig quality i see in your post is the last part of the last sentence: "hope that my life here is better for following that compass". I hope though you just forgot to mention other peoples´ lives.
