MONEY was the real reason, and TAXES COLLECTED was the real reason the northern states allowed it to go on. as it funded the federal government which allow the US to do thing like the Louisianian purchase. or buy Florida, or fund expeditions westward, to subsidize and build rail roads to put up telegraph poles to make trans state communication possible. No one then cared about slaves outside a hand full of bleeding heart abolitionist. not even Lincoln. He won based on the idea he would keep slavery going. not because god willed it because the country as a whole needed slaves then. Stop pretending people could not worship god without slaves. the morality of slavery was a non issue just like any other institutional belief. Do you need God's permission to have an abortion? can you find a passage or two where God killed some wicked little monster to justify your own abortion? but do you need it? same thing here. lazy people who dont know or care about history are looking for easy answers.. Rather than God made us do it. it was the social economic befit of this country, it shaped our landscape and defined who we were back then as well as who we are not. if not for the slave labor and the money generated by the slaves this o country would still potentially be 3 different countries.
