Actually - researching religion shows how religions evolved from ONE ANOTHER over time - and the fact that this DID happen is hard to deny. As nations absorbed or put others into bondage - religions changed to add the newest feature of the religions to keep them "current".
Now - if YOU ignore the obvious deception of religion - the history of religion is NOT a history of gods - but it IS a history of the Governance of humans - and the history of the Law of humans as well. THAT is what early religion was - a way to keep the masses of uneducated people in line when you had no other way to communicate with them. PUT a mythical creature above them and tell them what to do - and they more or less obeyed.
Education is what allowed science to prove that the "mythical" basis of religion is nonsense - and as more and more people get educated - less and less people believe their religion even if they stay in them/ - but what replaced religion is other forms of governance - with the people more represented in many cases.
