I was thinking something very similar - so it must be true. The thing is that as this is a faintly religious idea I have to disagree with you on some of the minutiae which will eventually lead to war between our 2 rival factions.
The amoeba did not fall off his boot. Something went wrong on the trip back and Nick was stranded, at the bottom of the ocean. Rather than die a slow death of asphyxiation he opened the doors and was instantly crushed to death by the pressure. Life actually started from the anaerobic bacteria living in his gut.
All hail the holy gut!! From its bounteous reserves sprang forth us (and some shit).
Nick had to die to save us from never being born.
He is the saviour - all praise Nick.
