No idea, but I don't think it's that far-fetched. Many people seek out a deeper spiritual meaning to life, and since most folks are raised believers in god, they either stick with their pre-selected religion or find another that fits them better. For someone raised without god, that drive to fill the "god-sized hole" could lead them anywhere. For others it might be a period of great grief or stress which leads them to seek answers they thought they always had.
People make changes like this from time to time. The unpredictability of people is one of the things that makes us so interesting, in general.

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
