A religious saying I'm particularly not fond of is the one that goes something like "You can't serve two masters." In this case, the 'master' which would lead one to want to nurture and protect their child is in conflict with the 'master' that would lead one to be an unquestioning and obedient child toward the dictates of ones God as pronounced by ones church.
