It's definitely a good thing to tell someone first dealing with depression, and anyone suffering from depression too, but part of the problem is that depression leaves you feeling hopeless and the thought of trying to cope with it is overwhelming. I think the most important thing you can tell someone is that it is a long process and not to expect to be able to cope with it overnight.

Well, I think everyone can cope with it at some point. I feel like if I can do it, just about anyone can.
