Utilitarianism and Population Ethics
#11
RE: Utilitarianism and Population Ethics
I confess I also do things that I know contribute to suffering on some level. It's a fact of life, just by existing you cause potential harm. It's just a case of how much.

I try and minimise the harm as much as I can. I don't always succeed, and sometimes restraints such as available money forces a compromise. Also I am sometimes selfish, and don't live up to my ideals. Or I'm hypocritical, but I feel I can justify it somehow. I'm a fallible human (as well as the one true perfect God).

And of course, I try and do good in the world, where possible. I don't always succeed, and I could always do more than I do.

But I have have the ideals anyway, and I strive to get as close to them as possible, and to constantly review my morality. Every reduction in suffering, or good deed done, is better than nothing.
