There's precious little utility for rate of fire as a civilian. Basically, dangerous game/fast moving predators that might rush you ( a rarity in N. America nowadays) and target shooting. In the case of the latter the smaller the better, imo, it costs alot of money to put a few thousand rounds downrange a week. I've been doing the target shooting maintenance end with a 17wsm, basically a pellet gun with a .38 nailgun cartridge behind it that uses the same action as the 303. I've got alot of buddies that hunt with ARs now...but I still schlep the Enfield. 22lr has come down in price so I dusted off my semi-auto tube two two as well but haven't had time to shoot it as often. I did plink a few rounds at a small 100m range with my black rifle toting friends and their shit was jamming left right and center. IDK if my little sears popgun actually -has- a faster rof but I know I put more rounds out in the same frame of time.
I've heard them say "what if it's a long shot and I miss" - well...as an ambush hunter I don't believe in taking shots at an animal that you might "miss".....what if you horrendously and painfully - but not lethally...injure them and they escape through the palmetto to live a harrowing life of disability, right?
More on point to the thread...my sons in kindergarten, so he;s going to get his own first "real gun" for his birthday this year. It's been sitting in my closet. It;s a folding barrel pellet gun with the compression chamber removed. It doesn't actually work...but I;ll have him follow me around in the woods and to the range properly holding and toting it. Pointing it at what I point at and not pointing it at what I -don't- point at. When he shows me that he can manage that I have an identical piece that actually does work....figure he'll get to shoot it with supervision in the next year or two. Honestly, alot of the time that kids end up shooting themselves I wonder how familiar and how wll disciplined the kids were. Daddy had a gun, but never bothered to do anything that might keep his kid from shooting himself...from improper storage all the way to operational ignorance on the part of the child. We have alot of guns, in america...but no meaningful "gun culture" anymore.
