I've carried a blade of one type or another every day of my life from age 5, and you're correct, not one accidental discharge and not one single open-carry stop. I've never been told that my blades make others uncomfortable, and I often receive compliments on my pieces.

I'm a bit of an herbalist, and I harvest many specimens almost daily. A kukri is long enough, and utilitarian in a practical sense for my needs. Walking around town with a machete would be a bit too much, but a 10" blade is perfect for my needs and it doesn't arouse any alarm. I also carry a small knife as back-up. My fathers taught me the value of always having a sharp blade at hand.
