That nonbelievers don't help people is a fantasy adhered to by certain theists who can't deal with the fact that they don't have a monopoly on compassion, generosity, or kindness. They like to point to things they can accomplish because of their overwhelming numbers, and overlook how much more they could do. There are more churches than homeless people in America, if each of them tried to help one homeless person get off the street, there would still be about 100,000 churches left without any homeless person to help. Many of them complain about government welfare when they have the numbers to make it unnecessary if they really wanted to end poverty in America as we know it.
Atheists are about 2% of the population in America, they could be twice as generous as Christians without having a tenth of their impact. I only wish Christians were as much better than us as they like to think they are.
We do not see ourselves as better in helping people, we help because we care and we do not even consider what others do or do not do, we're to busy doing all the work it take to run such massive operations. In my city 90% of the homeless are feed by Christian organisations and it would be closer to 100% if they would come and take advantage of the gift. Like Christ freely gave of Himself we try and do like wise and give freely of ourselves and the blessings we receive from God. We also attend to the poor within our Christian churches, we can't neglect them now can we. A great deal of those churches you speak of are constantly trying to keep the doors open financially, it benefits the members and those who need the help we can provide, I know this because I belong to one that struggles every year. The Christian churches can't help everyone here and then help those in other countries who receive little to no help from their own countries. There are safe guards set up by the government here to help the homeless, yet the church has to take a huge roll to help these people, why, on our part it's because we care, as for the government and many people in this country selfishness gets in the way of caring, so just remember this we give freely to help others, there is no requirement for us to do so other than to be Christ like. God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
