Psychedelics often get one to think "outside" of one's box. That sounds like a direct threat to the mind control of religion to me -- one might consider and even experience alternatives in the sanctum of their own mind.

Not only that but psychadelics can show just how fallible our minds are. If someone who believes they experience the holy spirit all of the time dropped acid, they might just realize how much the holy spirit as been in their head.
