Who actually coined that well known absence/evidence phrase?

The first I know of that said it in print was Carl Sagan but he should have known better.

edit: Sagan was quoting and criticizing Martin Rees so it is Rees that should have known better Smile

You're likely to get a "math is not logic" response.....happened before..lol.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

evidence against paranormal activity:

You know the ghost hunter shows that find "evidence" how come they never show up in scientific journals? Hmm?

There isn't one shred of evidence of the existence of ghosts or anything else paranormal.

Its interesting how in three pages of discussion not a single one of our dedicated theists has shown his face. I guess that answers my query about their position.

What am I? Chopped liver? Frodo's tackling the issue on an adjacent thread, 'Theistic Claims and Proof'. Haven't seen Drich or Godschild though.

Kenneth Kitchen...an eypgtologist who dabbles as a fundie moron. A better way to say it would have been: Absence of evidence is not proof of absence.

It most assuredly is "evidence."

For example, the statement 2 + 2 = 5 is made and here is a small proof that it is false. You have 2 rocks in your left hand you throw on a table in front of you. You have another 2 rocks in your right hand you also throw on the table in front of you. The table does not hold 5 rocks therefore the statement that 2 + 2 = 5 is proven false.

Aha, a simple proof of a simple fact, namely that 2+2=4. Just for a laugh, go and post it in the philosophy section and watch the buttmunches try and babble their way around it.

OR if you don't have all your facts (variables) upfront, then 2+2=5 is true if by an error by ommission. the table holds 5 rocks because there was already one on it when you started throwing yours onto it. not looking at all the facts is how theists conveniently explain things in gaps.

Quote:We all have heard theists argue over and over again that "you can't prove god doesn't exist". So, I'll ask this question - what evidence do you require to prove his non-existence?

Why shift the burden of proof? I assert only "I do not believe in gods due to the lack of credible evidence" I make no claims, so need prove/falsify nothing. It is up to theists to prove their claims not to me to falsify them. I'm aware a great many believers seem too stupid to grasp the notion the burden of proof. That is not my problem, don't care even a little bit. Wink Shades

I'm actually pleased to hear that. Sagan couldn't have been so dumb. Who the hell is Rees and what credibility does he have?

You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Which doesn't make it true. I would have thought that should be obvious.
