Because in reality, what does any of the bickering we do really mean? It means nothing. We rant, we write, we shout, we become logical and try to be nice and none of that works. It ends with us either feeling good or bad at the end of the day based on how our actions and reations played out with other people. Does it make any differance? Not really. We feel differant. The people we talk to feel differant. But at the end of the day, we rarely make as big an impact on peaceful co-existance as we could. We often add fuel to the flame. Maybe even spark more fire. It's not a matter of "How can we prove why your god doesn't exist" or "How can we convince you that we don't and never will believe in anything"

It needs to be "When will we get to the point where what we believe is such a small ordeal that we don't even think of it anymore?"

Elaboration:

Atheist/minority/bi/tranny Tony is friends with Christian/majority/straight David. They don't talk about religion. They find different things to talk about because although they have different views on their personal opinions, that doesn't mean that should get in the way of their passion for cars.

Where feelign the need to mention what you do or don't believe in is a thing of the past.

To be honest, this sounds wonderful. I would love to find myself in a a position where this was possible, because honestly, I couldn't give two shits what someone believes, but unfortunately its an inherit property of any religion to try and convert you, and personally I struggle with a Christian telling me I'm going to hell without defending my position.

You're still right though, I've never actually convinced any Christian that they were right and I was wrong. Arguing never amounts to much. To quote scripture, perhaps it would be better suited to simply turn the other cheek, I'm just too proud to do that. Undecided

Off Topic:

OMFG! I LOVE YOU! Another TES lover! Yay!
But I worship Sithis, The Night Mother, Mephala and last but not least Sheogorath. Daedra are so interesting. Big Grin Of course, Dibella is cool too! And Mara. Big Grin
Back on Topic:

It's human emotions that get us riled up. Our experiences condition us so that we associate things with other things and make it a mess to try and understand things from other perspectives. If more people could learn to control that switch and know when an emotional argument or statement for a belief is appropriate and when it's not, the world would be better. As I mentioned before. Christians are not going to do this. Period. So I need to find atheist out there that can so I know whether or not my hopes in humanity are empty.

There's only so much impact one person like me can do. I'm trying my hardest but
I need the help of rational thinkers who can put past affronts behind them, think on their feet and know how to respond without an emotional argument. I've seen it done. I know as a species we are capable of this. But I've rarely seen it so I'm not sure if it's simply an anomoly amongst some or something most people don't put their time into learning.

It depends on how much you value the truth and teaching the others the truth.

I don't know, perhaps this is due to my Islamic upbringing, for example, there are hadiths that say "Ta Ha" means "Seeker of the Truth and Guide towards it".

I think people come on forums wanting to learn the truth, even if they have a severe bias against it.

I would agree with you in real life though, we shouldn't get into debates about this. But on forums, people are looking for a discussion.

And truth is great. I love the truth. But the truth doesn't work for some people. What we need is an alliance. A reason to come together despite our differances.

I'm looking for a solution. Discussions are pointless if there is no solution. All they do is provide entertainment that isn't targeted at an audience of 8th graders. I'm tired of discussions.

Most people won't change their views right a way. Discussions usually won't end with one side bowing to the other and saying you are right. But if gives you a lot to think about. You come to realize how strong or weak your arguments are. You get to know counter arguments, and counter arguments to counter arguments.

For example, we had a really good thread on the issue of evil/suffering. Simon Moon and I made a lot of progress. At the end, we disagree, but that doesn't mean we didn't learn anything or achieve anything.

If you feel like you shouldn't share your views or don't want to debate them, that's up to you. And if you don't feel the need to prove a religion is wrong, that's up to you.

I agree but I think everyone should be given a chance.

Oh, I'm not just limited to Talos, I worship all of the Nine, Talos I think is just the best example for Human guidance, being that he himself was once human. Sheogorath is my favourite Daedra by far, but I don't think it would be wise to live by his example Smile

Everybody wants to be right, but not only that, everybody wants everybody else to know that they are right. This is something all people are guilty of, religious or not.

It's difficult to set that aside, but not impossible. I don't suppose humanity is ready to let the hostility go just yet, but there can only be so many wasted words before people realise it isn't the solution. Don't give up on humanity just yet!

Sheogorath and Sanguine have got to be the coolest Daedra (The crazy staff that turns people into a fountain of gold, and the hangover-esque quest).

Why do you dislike religion?

I dislike religion because of all the hate and anti-science it preaches. I'm fine with most religious people in the UK, because most couldn't care less about any god, but the stories you hear about US fundies are horrible.

How did you come to believe (or not) in your current deity?

Various reasons. People talking about god always annoyed me (even when I was catholic) and when I actually read the bible, it all seemed a bit silly.

What has been your worst experience with Christians?

Not had many bad ones myself, but the worst probably was some Jehovah's Witnesses coming to the door and repeatedly tell me that I'm going to burn forever for not taking what they have to say as gospel.

What has been your most pleasant experience with Christians?

A couple of my best friends are christians, so probably those experiences (most involve alcohol Tongue).

I joined this forum becuase I googled it and it seemed like a better alternative to the other (seemingly more hostile) atheist websites.

I would like to discuss several topics here and get feedback. This is mostly just because my faith (haha) in humanity keeps getting shot down time and time again.

If it's not Christians and their hate rant then it's Islam, Judaism (spell check?) and atheism.

I've simply come to the conclusion that stupid runs in all families. Which is funny because I've found a lot of atheist who claim that they are smarter than religious people. This turns out to be incorrect a lot more often than you think.

I'd like to start off with stating the obvious:

Not all Christians are stupid.

Not all Atheists are smart.

Now that that's been established we can get to the base of the issue.

Why all of the hate? I understand it's a part of humanity. Not everyone is perfect. But for a leading belief in atheism to be that they are smarter than Christians they certainly don't act like it.
I understand this is subjective. But I also know I'm going to get a lot of the people that fall under this catagory respinding to this thread. Which is what I'm hoping for.

Tell me:

Why do you dislike religion? (or state if you're indifferant with an example of your indifferance)

How did you come to believe (or not) in your current deity?

What has been your worst experience with Christians?

What has been your most pleasant experience with Christians?

FYI, my spelling and grammar are not top notch. I apologize in advance for the atrocity. (Yes, I know it's spelt wrong. No, I'm not spell checking right now because I'm too lazy)

Don't know what you base some of your facts on, but I don't think Atheist all claim to be clever. Now to your questions:
How did you come to believe (or not) in your current deity?
Talking snakes, virgins that bear children and dead men walk. Enough said right there.
What has been your worst experience with Christians?
My family and community. In in the area I live, there is no room for anything else.
What has been your most pleasant experience with Christians?
Christmas.

When I came here, I simply googled for "atheist forum". First hit was this site, and I never went looking for another! Wink

It's not a dislike, it's an "I don't care".... the curches around here are full of old people.... in a few more decades, they'll be nearly empty... It's a fad that has lasted long enough and is now visibly dying off... at least, around here!

No one has ever made me be uncomfortable, on account of religion.... maybe I've been uncomfortable just because some people are dicks, but it had nothing to do with their religion.

I married one.

hmmm.... I fail to see the trap....
Are you the 3rd of these I hear of in this forum?
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/its-a-trap
“It’s A Trap!” is a catchphrase that is often used as a reaction to photos of transsexuals and crossdressers (often referred to as “traps”), or people who appear sexually ambiguous. It usually means that the person in question has male reproductive organs, regardless of their appearance. Though less frequently, the phrase can be also used as a warning of any potential danger.

I read your post about that. It's nice to have close family to talk to about that stuff, huh? Everyone in my family is either Christian or in a Christian cult based on newage beliefs.

I'm not stating facts so much as personal experience. It is a fact that I've seen just as many atheist with a superiority complex as Christians. But of course I can't prove this so you'll either have to trust me (not holding my breath) or dismiss it. A superiority complex is common amongst all humans and not dependant on religion or lack thereof. Just saying so no one flames me >.>
