We Should Thank Murderers, Here is Why

RE: We Should Thank Murderers, Here is Why
Actually, I saw it as a worthy attempt to provide a new track for the train of discussion, rather than derailing it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Thanks! I think it's an avenue worth wandering down...
My oldest was hospitalized for jaundice when he was 5 days old. He was the biggest baby in the NICU at 6.5 pounds, and the nurses told me he was healthiest too. He didn't need anything too invasive, just some sun bathing under the lights, though they had to dig around his arm with a needle to get a blood draw :-( I was a sobbing, sleepless wreak. But all those tiny, very sick babies... No one would ever want harm to come to their child... But some of the babies in that NICU had a very long, hard road in front of them. I think it's a morally ambiguous subject.

Where it gets sketchy to me, festive, is where people insist on keeping a baby alive who has absolutely no chance at a normal or even semi-normal life. People with disabilities can get around fairly well thanks to technological advances these days, but some parents fight to keep children who are absolutely immobile or living in what amounts to a glorified vegetative state. That's not fair to anyone involved. Then I have a problem with the insane insistence to keep someone alive.

Thank you. Coming up to thirty months soon. In fact, it was for that reason that the chain of events leading to my recent problems happened at all.

I fully agree, and acknowledge that one could take the slippery slope to killing everyone with disabilities for the sake of mercy. But insisting that doctors do everything medically possible to save a baby born at 24 weeks gestation... I can't say I agree with that. So it comes down to where is that line? When is it cruel to prolong life and when is prolonging life necessary to give a fighting chance to save it?

The problem with that is there is no black and white, and...well, this country sucks at looking at all the shades of grey.

And the exceptions... There are babies born at 24 weeks who make quite miraculous recoveries and go on to lead full lives. However, they are the exceptions, not the majority. As far as I understand it, there's no real way for doctors to predict which cases will be successful and which will not. But does that mean every premie should receive drastic care? I don't know.

And are those babies who make the miraculous recoveries the ones born to parents who can keep throwing money at the hospitals? That'd be another factor.

Right. Just because someone can afford the medical bill, doesn't mean those who can't shouldn't receive the same quality of care or treatment options. But that has significant monetary implications for everyone...
