backwards compared to what nation? or on what standerd?
it`s not all sunshine in europe - we are very racist - especialy in the south. catholic europe is very backwards - just look at italy. and compared to afghanistan youre still top. 
Highly significant factor. Add that to the money that corporations make by continuing to pollute the air and water and it adds up to a perfect storm of nuttiness.

As this country becomes more ashamed of our God the further we slide economic power/world leader. If you point back to our past as a world leading nation you also have to recognise the the strength in the faith we had as a nation in God/Christianity.  RE: Backwards nation

Drich beat me to it. Atheists have been crowing lately that Christianity is on the decline in America. Now you note that America is in economic/power decline. 2+2=4 anybody?
Do we really need to point out that correlation does not equal causation?

Germany - 40-50% of the population atheist - strongest economy in europe since the 90s. and the number of atheists is growing.
