"Gods are fragile things; they may be killed by a whiff of science or a dose of common sense."
-- Chapman Cohen

To kill a religion all you need is one generation of non-believers: by, me just, then, right off the top of my head

RE: Favourite Quotes
This one needs a little bit of context to be properly understood.

During his show (can't remember if it was 2008 or 2009), Tim Minchin was talking about the theory of evolution and how people that contest it always seem to use the same line: "But evolution is only a THEORY".

Then Tim says:

"Hopefully they will feel the same way about the theory of... gravity. And they might as well just float the f**k away".

"A fool says in his heart, 'There is no god.'
A wise man shouts it from the rooftops."
Mark Palmer (@ The Center for Inquiry Blasphemy Contest)

RE: Favourite Quotes
For thousands of years, man has used religion as hsi sword to get what he wants. Now, when others turn to him and demand he take responsibility for his actions, he flings down the sword and declares that it is the weapon itself's fault. - Myself, on religion and Atheism Smile

Hope it's okat to bump this topic, thought it would be kind of dumb to make a whole new one...

RE: Favourite Quotes
"I think folks carry on about heaven too much, like it's some kind of all you can eat buffet up in the clouds and folks just do as they told so they can eat what they want behind some pearly gates. There's sinning in my heart, there's evil in the world but when I got no one, I talk to God. I ask for strength, I ask for forgiveness, not peace at the end of my days when I got no more life to live or no more good to do but today, right now... "

Reverend R.L from the movie black snake moan

"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

"A lot of people are unwilling to acknowledge anything that contradicts their worldview. So telling them that it's false doesn't necessarily slow them down. That's how urban legends get started for the most case. Like the woman who supposedly put her poodle in the microwave to dry it off. And it exploded." David Mikkelson (snopes)

"I say of Jesus, as all humanists do, "If what he said is good, and so much of it is absolutely beeautiful, what does it matter if he was God or not?" " -Kurt Vonnegut, in A Man Without a Country...

I wish I'd been able to meet this man. He's one of my favorite authors of all time, sadly, he died several years before I even learned of who he was. Sad

Luckily for him there is no hell.

Quote:It is often argued that religion is valuable because it makes men good, but even if this were true it would not be a proof that religion is true. That would be an extension of pragmatism beyond endurance. Santa Claus makes children good in precisely the same way, and yet no one would argue seriously that the fact proves his existence. The defense of religion is full of such logical imbecilities. - H. L. Mencken
