All Hail the Second Amendment
RE: All Hail the Second Amendment
Sorry, "Actually it is" referred to the AR being an M-16, M-4, all of the above...just pick one. Smile.

So, yes, it can be considered equivalent to military grade, despite your attempts at silly semantics. So giving it the same capabilities but calling it something different, for you, makes it something different. Am I understanding you correctly?

Semi-automatic AR-15s for sale to civilians are internally different from the full automatic M16, although nearly identical in external appearance. The hammer and trigger mechanisms are of a different design. The bolt carrier and internal lower receiver of semi-automatic versions are milled differently, so that the firing mechanisms are not interchangeable.

So what exactly is your idea of an assault rifle?

The term assault rifle actually had a very specific definition before the media got a hold of it. The main thing, the thing that sets an AR you could buy at Wal-Mart from a military assault rifle is the military weapon is select fire. If it isn't select fire it isn't an assualt rifle. It isn't an M16 or an M4. All of those weapons are select fire. A civilian AR is not. The bottom line is the media took something that was not an assualt rifle, labeled it as such and for you Bad Writer, that was apparently enough to make it something different.

Going full auto? Eh. Even during the Veitnam war they told soldiers to never go full auto with their M16s because they would waste too much ammo without hitting anything.

My weapon in the military was full auto because it was a 50 cal. But with an M16 you would get more kills per round by keeping it on semi-automatic.

'I've never even held a fully auto M4 or M16. They are out there, sure, but if an M16 is not fully automatic, does that make it a non military weapon? So if it's semi-automatic, it's okay for civilian distribution? You guys have some strange ways to justify this.

This is a Ruger Mini-14.

It is not a military weapon. It is not select fire or fully automatic. It is sold to the public not the military. Is that a problem?

An AR-15 is not capable of fully-automatic fire; M-16s are. You don't know what you are talking about, but apparently you think that doesn't matter.

I'm not talking about the Ruger being equivalent to a military weapon or an assault rifle, so we can safely drop that red herring. I know that the M16 can go full auto, but that's a non issue, as Rahul pointed out that it's more dangerous when used as a semi-auto weapon, and is therefore mostly used as such (I have experience with the M-16 and the M-4, by the way). The AR-15 is something you brought up as we were talking about assault weapons; I didn't mind, as they occupy their own niche in this type of discussion. I then pointed out that they are essentially an M-16/M-4, which is true. Here's the point that seems to keep getting glossed over during these last couple posts: even though an AR cannot go fully auto its semi-auto feature makes it as capable as a military-grade weapon. That's why it keeps getting used as a choice weapon in mass shootings, and another factor to go hand-in-hand with this is that 3/4 of the guns used in these incidents were obtained legally.

A Ruger Mini-14 is functionally identical to an AR-15. Both are .223 semi-automatic rifles.

It depends on the range.

No, you're wrong. This has been pointed out to you many times.

What is a military-grade weapon, and why does that matter? Do you honestly think that the casualty count at Sandy Hook would have been lower if Lanza had used a Mini-14 instead?

9mm pistols are the weapon of choice in mass shootings.
