Why am I naiv? I guess there is simply a cultural difference here. I live in a country in which the dreamish concept of a "glorious past" is considered to be a scam used by the most vial and thugish criminals in politics.
I didn't intent to create offense, TGAC. I used that particular word because there's ample evidence that racism is alive and well in some parts of the U.S..

So I would have guessed that in the southern states of the US, something as racialy based discrimination, which is today frauned uppon by the entire world, is seen as a very dark and horrific chapter of the past. At least in the state institutions because I am aware that the population sees things differently.
You know, I don't doubt that there are southerners who feel that way - certainly we have seen our share here who are not bigoted. But there are others who are still racist - and while you don't see the overt racism in politics that existed in our past, where laws directly targeted the hated minority de jure, you do see attempts to pass laws that indirectly target those same minorities while not glaringly appearing to do so. Poll taxes. Literacy requirements for voting. Vastly longer sentencing for crack cocaine compared to powder cocaine. The list goes on and on.
