Civ 5

I'm playing a standard game as the Russians, the way to win is by conquering/defeat (I picked this to get used to battling on the game and to make it easier for my first time), I picked the map of Russia for geographical coherence, I made an alliance with Morocco, I'm not at war with anyone, currently I'm on the medieval age and my topping the overall statistics (yeah I'm playing on the easier difficulty). The game felt boring at first but as I played it it got more and more interesting, I'm looking forward to see more.

What social policies do you guys pick?

Are you playing vanilla, or with the expansion(s)?

That depends entirely on what Civ I'm playing and what the victory conditions are.

I've been using Commerce, Rationality, Autocracy, and Liberty - these fit well with my play style (seafaring, technological, warmongering, expansionist).

RE: Civ 5
For the military minded, honor and autocracy should be a given. Commerce will help with gold, which is crucial in all areas. Liberty should probably be used if you plan to keep many cities. If you're razing most of them, and trying to build tall instead of wide, then tradition may help you more.

Piety and Rationalism are mutually exclusive, much like you can only pick Autocracy, Order, or Freedom. You could pick Piety early, and go for Rationalism later. Just try to switch during a Golden Age so you don't have to worry about anarchy. The last one has to do with city states, and taking that will depend on whether you want to make friends with city states or not. Or if you even have them.

Blackout, since you've got the expansions, try out Venice on an Island map with the Commerce policy tree. You'll have more money than you know what to do with, and you can grab up all the military buildings that give bonus experience to units and you can buy an elite army with a jingle of the gold purse.

RE: Civ 5
Ok so I conquered a random city, but before I demanded some gold tribute, it seems like all the other civs hate me now. How much is the difference from conquering a small city and conquering another player's civ? I'm at the medieval era, I have catapults, swordsmen, Horse-riders and soon I'll have knights. It will take at least more 50 turns to transition to the next era so it would be cool if I started annexing more territories.

By the way, can I keep building farms and lumber camps, as many as I wish? Or should I stop?

Those other civs may have been friends with the citystate, which is why they dislike you now.

I build farms and lumbermills all the time. I wish we had the ability to create forests. I'm pretty sure we could do it in civ 3.

The key to being not thought a warmonger is to not attack cities other civs are friendly with. They'll hate on you if you attack their friends, and generally won't care if you attack their enemies.

In the late stages of the game, you won't care.

Yeah, whenever I play you usually get one or two civs everyone hates (usually the Mongols or Persians as they're expansionist douchers) and then the rest of the civs will form a sort of 'alliance of do-gooders' who denounce the couple of unfortunate civs. The easiest way to make friends is to denounce the same people they do. The strange thing about denouncements is it usually impacts far more with other civs than the one you're denouncing. I've denounced civs before only to have them want to be friends a few turns after the denouncement wears off, whereas if you denounce a friend of someone, they'll seemingly remember this heinous act til the rest of the game.

As for your workers, keep using them, the cost of the upgrade won't really hurt you as your economy should be growing all the time anyway and the benefits of having improved worker tiles far outweighs the very small cost of improving them.
