IT support/employee rant thread

RE: IT support/employee rant thread
Computer users are bad, but printer/copier users are worse! I had a customer complaining that the machine jammed every time she added fresh paper, I spent 2 hours trying to make it it jam... worked fine. I asked her to show me how she was adding paper, she got a ream of paper off the shelf then put it into the copier... without taking it out of the plastic wrapper! The poor copier was trying to feed a 2 inch lump of paper!

Did IT lev3 support for 15 years (NT certified).
The company was a bit like this forum ... we all got on well and socialised after hours also...

Anyway, the CFO asked me to go to his place to tune in his video recorder! (his wife was home!)
Couldn't complain? had a company car? what to say? good waste of 3 hours!

Then he decided he was having a midlife crisis and decided to buy a classic mustang convertible.
Because I had one, he asked me to go with him. Being a big bloke, and not a car person, he asked me to inspect it thoroughly and also to look underneath it to see if it was in good nick!

Why do some people think they own you? (just because you work for them)

People sometimes phone, and I greatly underestimate the PC's people have sometimes. People still have 3'5 diskette drives and still leave them at boot primarily in said drive. Next time that happens, I'll charge 50 euros!

Most users believe I arbitrarily made rules to deny them some type of service.

Speaker phone on our VoIPs are only authorized if the Commander Signs off, well most people do not believe this rule exists. Of course, they ask the commander, and he shits on their party.

Yes, many times, users thought some "switch" could be flicked to achieve what they want.

Faster, different functionality, whatever.

The funny part is, sometimes that switch DOES exist.

I'm aging myself here, but I seem to remember some DEC minicomputer had such a switch and the only difference between machine "A" costing $$$$ and machine "B" costing $$$$$$$ was the position of that switch.

But usually, there is no such switch, physical or virtual.

Oh, and my keyboard needs defragging.
I've been in IT for about 18 years. I actually did have a user who complained that her "monitor wasn't working" and it turned out to be that her PC was powered off.

Bear in mind, this was an old PC-XT, which had a large red switch on the side with clearly labeled "ON" and "OFF" positions. This was akin to complaining that the room was dark then sheepishly realizing that you hadn't opened your eyes.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I used to do PC support decades ago - and I'm not surprised there were still PC-XT's still running back then.

Kind of hard to miss the Big Red Switch, IMO. At least it was plugged in. Big Grin I can't tell you the number of support calls that went like this:

"My PC won't work."
"Power cycle it." (turn off, wait, then back on)
"Still doesn't work."
"Are you sure it's plugged in?"
"Of course I am, do you think I'm stupid or something?"
"Of course not, sir. Would you please humor me and double check it?" (this means "I don't know if you're stupid or not, but we're going to perform an empirical test to find out."
<grumbles> "Oh, OK."
(time elapses)
"Hey, it started working again, thanks."

Poorly named button. Should have been named the "Slow my PC the fuck down so that my ancient games that stupidly assume that the whole world will forever run at 4.77MHz will be playable by something other than a hummingbird on a cocktail of crack cocaine and meth."
