Well, IT is an important part of the machinery within any organization, but it's not the driving force of the organization.
Scientists need computers running, but IT isn't going to do science.

That's like saying that drone ants don't get enough respect, even though they are the driving force behind a colony's survival and growth.

Yes, they are important. And on an individual level, expendable.
