The Y2K bug was very real and had nothing to do with religion. It would not have been the end of the world had it not been fixed during the 90s but it would have been quite a mess.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

To be fair - they never promised to stop. Catholic priesthood couldn't have been made a better cover for a pedophile, if it was invented by a committee of psychopaths, for the sole purpose of raping children. Which it might have been, for all I know.
