Cost of living, OP/ED........

RE: Cost of living, OP/ED........
Hey, I'm an old fart and even I have learned to link my computer to my TV so I can watch Youtube on a 48 inch screen while keeping my computer free for places like AF.

I have my laptop and my chromecast. I pay for NetFlix, and my sister lets me use her logins to watch HBO, Showtime, and AMC. HBO, Showtime, Netflix, YouTube, etc. are all available to watch on chromecast, which cost me $25.

Granted, my sister's a TV junky, and that allows me to watch the stuff I want, but it's way better than spending the fortune it takes to have cable. She'd pay for it anyway. If I didn't have her logins, I probably just wouldn't watch that stuff.

There are so many torrent sites that you can watch virtually any movie you want. Most movies made are not worth watching although I did see Citizenfour that way (the Snowden movie.)

Nope I am a news junky and now I only get local news on cable. I could care less about renting movies online.

Umm, rabbit ears? Unless you live in the sticks.

I'm cutting my cable as soon as I get off contract. There's nothing I can't get online I want to watch.

You can get local news online. I subscribe to a bunch of news sources, local, regional, national, and international. I also get alerts on my phone, which is unnecessary since I'm on my computer most of the time, but it's nice when I'm out and about. Movies are just a small percentage of what you can watch on the internet. You'll still spend some money, but you can pick and choose what you spend it on.

Local news drives me crazy. 8 minutes of commercials, 6 minutes of sports, 6 minutes of car crashes/cop shootings or fires/ 4 minutes of weather, 4 minutes of some kid running a bake sale, 1 minute of important news and 1 minute of banter between the cast.

This.

TV news ain't what it used to be. I swore it off years ago. If I want news, I can get significantly better and wider coverage online.

I haven't tuned in to the cable news networks since about a year after 9/11, and I don't feel like I'm missing a damn thing.

I've been living happily without cable (or very good reception either) for about 15 years. I wouldn't include it in the cost of living. But so much is online now that internet access is a necessity. A land line, not so much.

70 years ago food cost more than housing and housing was much, much, smaller per person and of lessor quality even for the rich. The average family had one car not one per driver. Part of what's happening is our increasing requirements.

The internet is my new TV most of the times.
