LHC starting up again

RE: LHC starting up again
Interesting observation: the last beams seem to have gone above 6.5 TeV. Maybe we get collisions above 13 TeV after all...

Is there any realistic possibility of detecting super symmetry with this thing?

Yes in principle. If it exists in nature. we do however not know how heavy the super partner particles are. Above a certain mass LHC can't make them. There are three reasons to hope that they are not too heavy. The 125 gev Higgs needs somewhat heavy super partners, but if they are too heavy beyond that point, parameters need to be increasingly fine tuned. Gettng realistic dark matter becomes more tricky if super partners are very heavy. Thirdly, the unification of forces works best if super partners are not too heavy. The range where it works best however is at the upper end of LHC reach and beyond that, so this is a somewhat ambivalent.

So we'll have to get lucky. I wish we had gotten the super conducting super collider in Texas. At least we got to invade Iraq, though. Facepalm

It makes me a little bit giddy that I can just ask you questions about the LHC. You rock!

Seconded.
Thanks for the link to CERN displays.
After a little wandering there, I find I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking at.
I'm grateful for whatever linkage you can give between what they're doing and the college math I vaguely remember.
Like, why, with all the money spent on the project, do their graphics look like 1993?   Big Grin Some sort of time twisting?
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

Anybody taking bets on what they'll find?

I wish I knew enough to be able to place a bet.

But I've got dibs on any new dimensions they find!

I think I must have misheard. I watched the video again and the narrator says "dark universe". Then again, wouldn't extra dimensions imply other universes besides our own? Or am I mistaken?

Edit:I'm off to find to find out what exactly is meant by the term "dark universe" as it's not a tern I've come across before.

The SSC would have covered the plausible susy region more thoroughly. LHC was limited by the existing LEP tunnel. But we just don't know.

If I had a clue I'd write a paper. I think missing energy from dark matter of some sort is plausible. A new force carrier maybe, usually dubbed Z'
