Ahhhh....Texas. It is in a world of its own y'all.
Even one of my favorite video bloggers, who lives in eastern Texas, and one of us Nones, does not like it there:

Google tells me the following. I haven't verified these, so...grain of salt:
-In Texas, it is illegal to own more than six dildos. Six is fine, seven is a felony.
-The Encyclopedia Britannica (all of it) is banned in Texas because it contains a recipe for making beer at home.
-It is unlawful to shoot a buffalo from the second story of your hotel.
-Criminal are required, under state law, to give their victims a minimum of 24 hours advance notice (either orally or in writing), explaining the nature of the crime to be committed.
Fair play, though. Here are some of the idiotic laws I grew up with. In Northern Ireland:
-The penalty for suicide was death by hanging.
-It is still illegal (technically) to go to the cinema on a Sunday.
-It is unlawful to wrestle a live tiger in public (one assumes that it is perfectly OK to wrestle a dead one in private).
-Still some of the strongest anti-blasphemy laws to be found in the non-Muslim world.

That seems a tad redundant.

That seems like a great law. If someone screws up, the government helps them succeed!
(Or do you mean, that it is the penalty only for those who were successful in killing themselves?)
No, there was no penalty for merely
attempting to off yourself. Those who succeeded were hanged post mortem as a warning to others that suicide was a mortal sin.
