Do you have the right to be an atheist?

RE: Do you have the right to be an atheist?
What rights exactly do we retain? Are we still entitled to not believe in unicorns for instance? Thank gawd we have you around to let the rest of us know how things stand.

RE: Do you have the right to be an atheist?
I'm getting a headache just by looking at this thread now.
It would be better off for me to simplify things.

This is what i think:

1*Aliens exist.
2*Superior Aliens exist.
3*Aliens have supernatural powers.
4*God is a "Supreme being" or a being that possesses supernatural powers that are beyond comprehensible for humans.
5*A Superior Alien race fit into the description of a god.
6*So Superior aliens are Gods.
7*Therefore Gods exist.

Tell me which part of my arguments are wrong and don't just say "its wrong" just because you think so,provide me with enough convincing information too.
Most of us think that the probability of a God in the universe is non-existent but believes in the existence of Aliens anyway.......

@Tonus , Thanks. :Big Grin

EDIT: I gave my points in the most simplified manner assuming that you're read through the detailed description of arriving at there point already,if you haven't please read that first or my points would look unconvincing.

The part where you don't mention likelihood and the part where this reasonably strips us of our "right to be atheist".

I'm really sorry about the Title of this thread i really am.This is my first thread in this forum and generally in any forum for quite a lot of time. Its misleading i agree sorry again.

Back to Likelihood.I was successful in bending the argument in such a way that i don't really have to prove the Probability of "God" in the universe,i just have to point out the likelihood of "Aliens" existence in this universe and there are whole organisations dedicated to finding this life form(s).

Did you find any fault in my points?

It's fine. My last two posts came off more blunt than they should have. So I should apologize for that too.

I addressed the other disagreement in my first post. Basically you are applying a term for atheist that does not apply to many atheists, myself included. A belief is binary. How accurately we believe that belief to be determines whether or not we believe it is knowledge. The statement an atheist will unequivocally make is "I do not believe in god". That is a statement very different from saying I know god does not exist. Because the second statement adds another layer of belief to the picture. The belief of how accurate ones belief is.

I think it might be a question of how likely it is that any alien races would be superior, or that they have supernatural powers. Adding attributes beyond "they exist" requires some basis. If we can determine that there are galaxies that are much older than ours, and that there might have been stars and planets that had a substantial head-start, then there might be alien races out there that have evolved far beyond us. How superior they are would require us to consider some options: if they're just like us but with four arms and scaly skin they might just be able to whip our asses with half-effort.

Supernatural is a whole other kettle of fish. We haven't verified that such a thing is possible, so there's no reason to assume that it is true. If we're starting from square one with minimal information, then it's just as possible that any alien races out there are far beneath us, and would consider us to be the gods. In which case, we would be the proof that gods exist. And I'm okay with that, because I have a pretty high opinion of myself. But it might be a let-down for everyone else.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I'll respond to each of your poiints:

1. The likelihood of this being true are extremely high. Think of the numbers: 200 billion galaxies, each with 100+ billion stars, an unbelievably high number of planets, building blocks of life found in meteors and water in interstellar space. So yes, the probability that a high number of planets have life is great.

2. Also very high probability, given the numbers of galaxies, stars, planets, building blocks of life, etc. Have they visited earth? Very, very improbable.

3. How did you reach this conclusion? Why would other intelligences, if they exist, be able to  suspend the laws of physics?

4. Yes, that is one of the many definitions of a god given by believers.

5. No it doesn't. An advanced alien race would come about via the same sorts of natural processes that humans have. If their technology is advanced enough, it may appear to be magic and god like, but there is no reason to actually believe it is.

6. Nope. Just extremely advanced intelligences, that are able to use technology at a much higher level than current human technology.

Our current technology would look supernatural to humans just a couple of hundred years ago. Doesn't make it supernatural, does it?

7. Nope. Just super advanced aliens.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
