Any ideas?

RE: Any ideas?
It was a joke Mr Serious face!

Just because the subject was specifically AV, what people were really talking about was all round protection.

When talking PC protection... something like MS Security Essentials is a very good all round solution. Nowadays threats to PC health are mostly not through virus infection, but malware infection. Basic protection would best include malware protection. The conclusions of a specialist av comparison site that doesn't yet factor malware threat are pretty weak.

Put the USB stick back in your trousers!

LOL. Sorry, the visual that gave me. "Let me put my USB stick in your......" made me lol.

Sorry.

Back on MY topic...

I don't know about Nortons, I did do the control panel uninstall. It acts as if it was successful ("XXXX has been removed from your computer")

But then I still get the "update Nortons" or "Warning: Norton's is out of date, click here to upgrade" pop-ups.

It's only annoying at the most, but annoying nonetheless.

You could try their removal tool : http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsg...3108162039

Hilariously Windows ME environment was so damn awfully unstable whenever it contracts a virus, usually it was the malware, not the OS, that crashed. It's like Linux, but absolutely retarded. =]

Adrian: Here are some good virus scanners.
fr0d0: That's pretty poor overall advice for computer security.
Adrian: I didn't say it was overall advice, it was virus specific.
fr0d0: Haha! I win!

I'm not so sure...I think I recall you saying that viruses aren't very relevant these days.

Tell you what, you uninstall your virus scanner and let me insert my USB stick into your computer. Then we'll see how irrelevant viruses are...

hey, sounds like we are all 'grown ups' here. ROFLOL

@Paul

Why did you change from AVG to AVAST? (free version I presume)

Currently I use:

AVG (free)

Zone Alarm (free)

Peer Blocker (free)

Adaware as a scanner (free)

I've found the combination excellent so far.

Have also used:

Norton

Nod 32

PcCillin

Mcafee.

Kaspersky

Of them I liked Nod 32 the best. Recently I've read reviews claiming Norton's 2010 version is excellent. These days I've pretty well stopped looking for the Holy Grail of the perfect antivirus and firewall . I read reviews and change mine once a year.

I changed about a year ago, because I got a trojan that AVG couldn't seem to handle (I don't recall the name). It caused all of my anti-malware applications to stop working and would not allow new ones to be installed. I searched for a solution and found a site with instructions saying to use Avast! I had to change the exe. file name in order to install it and then run the scan pre-boot in order to nail the sucker down. It worked and I have been using Avast! ever since.

And yes, I'm using the free version.

The best thing about Avast is the boot scanner.

Neat.

I'm gonna get me some of that Avast stuffs. Right now I have nothing but what came with Winders Vista.

I know I need better stuffs, and I do believe, based on the posts here, Avast seems to be the one I should use. Unless you all would care to keep discussing and I'll keep a-reading.

RE: Any ideas?
Avast comes with a load of additional scanners (called "Shields") that add an additional level of security. One time Avast failed to notice a new type of spam virus that sits in your system and sends spam email. Whilst the Avast virus scanner didn't detect it, the mail scanner did. After all, you aren't going to be sending 100's of messages with the word "viagra" in them (having said that, I am talking to Dotard...).

If you keep the virus database up to date, you won't have any problems. Of course, it won't be as good as some of the paid products, but the difference is negligible.
