You're correct, they were. When the money grabbers found out that there's some dime to be made, they turned into a regular more of the same industry. Complete with the micro transaction machinery. The times when they were innovative and the developers actually gave a shit are long over.

The major game publishers are kind of an inverted King Midas. Everything they touch is turned to shit.

Yes! I remember someone describing Wolfenstein 3D to me and I was trying to imagine it. I then got a copy of it and played it myself. You could only move the gun left or right, no up or down.





A couple of years later a friend brought a new PC and her boyfriend installed Doom on it. I eventually bought my own computer and played a demo of Doom on Linux.




And then a few years later Quake came out and the big thing with that was that it was a proper 3D environment rather than simulated. The graphics were really cutting edge as well compared to Doom.




And then came Counter-Strike and I ended up playing that game to the exclusion of anything else for the next decade. The intensity of playing with other people was a step beyond anything I had played before.




And then there were games were you could play as a first person shooter before jumping into a space ship or helicopter, or a tank etc. Games like Star Wars Battlefront 2, Operation flashpoint etc They brought a richness to the gaming environment.

@abaris, I know, I know. It's just a hard pill for me to swallow after being a fan of the genre for so long. But don't get me started. I could bitch for days about how big business has ruined gaming...

But seriously though, I think you're overgeneralising. FPS have become really popular in the last few years, but some of them are really not just about "mindless violence" and "slaughtering hordes of enemies". Maybe I'm a bit biased, but games like TF2 or CS:GO seem to me more about communication and strategy than anything else.

Also, MOBAs are way bigger than FPSs right now. Just look at twitch's front page. But I really find them boring lol

I understand what you mean by this but I strongly dislike multiplayer games, especially competitive ones. I find no fun in competition at all. Even playing a simple game of Battlefield annoys me because I find no motivation to be involved in the game, I would rather just explore the maps a bit and mess around then take part in the action. 

Also MOBAs are primarily a PC phenomena and their sales aren't that high as a genre. Look at VGChartz statistics and see for yourself.

This is what turned me off from online gaming in general. That and the time investment needed to be good enough to not get pwned by a random 7 year old kid.

No thanks. Being pwned by a second grader is decidedly not fun.

Welp, if competition isn't fun to you then I can't say anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And all multiplayer games are not equal: the "7-year-olds screaming in the mic" are not really that common, at least in my TF2 experience, and you can still mute them if they annoy you.

I find it really fun to play TF2 in a "serious" competitive league setting. It's a good way to get some steam off (uh uh puns) and to just have a good time with friends (both irl and online ones).

Yeah MOBAs are not that big outside of the PC scene, but they completely dominate competitive gaming. But I see your point when you say you don't like 'violent games' as MOBAs feel pretty boring imho... It all comes down to a matter of taste, seriously

I have enjoyed video games for a long time and until recent years have not been able to stand them that much. What I loved about games were their entertainment value and their illusion of being in another world. The genres I mist enjoyed growing up were stealth games and of course I am an avid Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu fan. I liked the games for their difficulty and sense of choice they provided. This shtick is entirely annoying and also boring as it does not make me enjoy the game since their is no immersion or point of interest. 
I do not connect to killing people or taking lives. I prefer to solve things in the best solution possible, I enjoy challenges and a sense of choice. I guess this is why RPGs have the biggest allure to me over any genre of game. 

How do you guys feel about excessive violence ruining games? Or do you enjoy it as many others do?

For me it has almost killed my gaming interest.

Honestly? I think your just not looking for games you like. There is more variety now then ever. And if you think they're getting more violent, well go play doom.

You might enjoy Deus Ex: Human Revolution, one of my favorite games. It is an FPS/RPG and has a very interesting story, it's set in 2027 and it's all about the morality of cybernetic enhancement on Humans. You might find it especially enjoyable because - excluding the boss battles - you don't have to kill anyone. It's all about choice. Also, I believe there is a patch which allows you to win the boss battles without killing them either. You can play the whole game stealthily if you want.
