I also like paintings by Gilbert and George who finally made crucifixion portrayal painting in it's place with impact of Christianity on society.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

RE: Paintings
I really like the work of Eyvind Earle.  He was hired by Disney to do the backgrounds for early animation, such as Cinderella.  He was a very prolific painter, he created hundreds of oils and serigraphs.   What I like about his works is his use of color and shape.  His landscapes (such as quiet solitude, below) show trees with very simple, circular shapes, but oh, the use of color is amazing.  He uses spots of bright color balanced perfectly with dark and light areas.
And if you visit the page that hosts this painting Eyvind Earle site he also includes a verse . . . I don't know if he wrote the poems or borrowed them, there is no attribution.   The verse that goes with Quiet Solitude is:

And as trillions and trillions of leaves fill the air

A soft emerald green makes the earth soft and fair
And a trillion more flowers than I can imagine
Burst open and laugh at earth's brilliant medallion
So let's reach up higher then ever before
And add to the joy of tomorrow once more
