Unlikely the number of Roman gods was near infinite, what with the Lares and the other household and crossroad minors, and, with the habitual elevation of emperors and their families (their promotion to glory), growing.

Islam was based on one mans desire to dominate and rule what he understood to be the world. To do this he had to Illegitimize Christianity not base his religion on it. Rather he returned to Judaism and strict pharisaical legalism to drive his religion, not the freedom found in Christianity.

It was yes, and Christianity gave him the fertile ground to work. Also if you think Christianity wasn't used the same way guess again. It was used time and again by rulers to accomplish the same goal. St. Cyrus and valens the first ( if I have his name right) both did so to great effect. Also Islam didn't traditionally force conversion the way Christianity did and they more then happy to trade with lots of religions and left their beliefs be. Hence we still have lots of Syrian and Egyptian Christians and Zoroastrians are still around.
