Need A Little Help

RE: Need A Little Help
I think Steel nailed it. Personally, I'll do a wipe rather than spend a lot of time beating my head against the wall.

I'm late to the party here, but I'll second this.

My wife had a similar problem on her laptop, she would search for something in google, click the link...and it would take her to another search engine.

I looked at it for a few days, ran traces through fiddler and procmon to see what exactly was happening.

I finally said 'fuck it', told her to backup DATA only.  I begrudgingly let her keep her office documents as xls files can have macros embedded that can do some nasty things.

I blew away her system and put the OS down fresh, and reinstalled her programs and everything was fine.  I spent more time troubleshooting than I did the wipe/reinstall.

For sure. I usually download a current-updated version of Windows every time this happens (about once every two years in my case). I also have my core programs in .iso form on a backup drive.

So: 15 minutes to download Windows, 15 minutes to install it, and I'm back up. I can play with the internet while I'm reinstalling all my programs, and maybe an hour later, it's like it all never happened.

Get a fucking virus or accidentally install something that hijacks my browser, and I could take hours and hours figuring out how to get rid of it. Probably going to involve restarting in safe mod, typing stuff in DOS prompts, downloading various ad cleaners and antivirus. Just not worth it.

That being said, my system gets screwed in this way WAY less often than it did 10 years ago. Unless I install something titled "Pornroulettedotcom.exe" or something like that, it's unlikely that I'm going to get anything.

System wiped.  Lost a few things but nothing too important.

Fucking Yahoo.

Thank you all for your efforts and general show of empathy.

Yahoo is the god damned devil.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Do you have a solid state drive?
Re-installing windows on one of those things is the best thing EVER. I keep meaning to slip stream the updates into my windows 7 media, but I never get that far.
Maybe next time....
