The mainstream christian belief is that there's a lake of fire where people are sent if they don't follow the religion. So basically worship this guy, or he sets you on fire.

Where do they get that belief? Is there a bible verse you can provide?

Yes, there are bible verses that talk about it. Like I said, it's mainstream.

Like this one? Mathew 25:46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Have you researched the original Greek words and meaning of the bolded above? You should.

And this: http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/etpunish.html

Church History

There is no documentation that the church councils of the first four centuries embraced the doctrine of "eternal punishment." The church councils at Nice in A.D. 325, at Constantinople in A.D.381, at Ephesus in A.D.431 and at Chalcedon in A.D.451 never embraced this doctrine. In contrast, there is documented evidence that many church leaders and teachers of the first centuries A.D. wrote acclaiming the doctrine of ‘universal salvation or "ultimate reconciliation", none of whom were censored. It was not until 553 A.D. that the Roman Catholic Church denounced the teaching of ultimate reconciliation as heresy. This is the same organization which:

Does it matter? Most christians believe in the hellfire version. It's a widely common belief to modern christians, so that's what I'm going off of.

I think it profoundly matters that the entire belief/position/assertion is incorrect according to their own source material. Not only incorrect but detrimental in the extreme to the individuals relationship with God.

Religion (Christianity in particular) is known for highjacking people's freedom for centuries (you'll either believe in god or we'll kill you), so free will can't come from religion. So, if god gave us the freedom to choose what to believe, that makes him an atheist.
What do you think about that thought?

I would say the Book of Revelation states hell is literally eternal. And if not literally, well, it sure as fuck sounds that way.

RE: God is an atheist
If god is omniscient, as a lot of religions state, (all knowing from second to second, from the beginning to the end of existance) then free will is only an illusion. You were predestined to believe or not believe from the beginning. So you are either rewarded or fucked from the start. If free will exists then god as defined can not exist and continued belief a delusion.
