last I looked as it relates to sexual immorality, the bible was against more than just homosexuality.

Let's see, there's adultery, fornication, bestiality, and incest.

But not rape strangely enough...[emoji57]

Edited for clarity:

Immoral as an act of damaging another man's property,  NOT as an immoral sexual act against the victim.  Before Huggy starts dropping bible verse bombs all over the place.

You do realize that there is a situation in the bible where a man rapes his half-sister and her brother kills him (killed his own half brother) in retaliation?

Wow, Pete.  Was that a subtle hell-threat?  And then you wonder why you get treated like a hive mind...*sigh*

Not at all. Did not intend for it to come off as a threat, didn't think the mention of hell would be perceived as a threat by a nonbeliever in this context. When I speak with people here about their beliefs or conjecture upon a life after this one I take no offense by those that take the nihilist stance, Muslim hell, or reincarnation, or any view different from mine.

Again, sexual proclivities and such are a sensitive and personal issue. It can be difficult to have opposing views on matters such as this without some taking offense. I didn't intend to offend anyone.

Abaris also made an interesting observation regarding the age of the OP.

Okay, I'm sorry; I misunderstood you then. We don't feel threatened by it, but many a theist have thrown it around with that intention, and it gets tiresome is all.

Yes. I believe I have read that particular story. I'm not quite sure what your point is though, Women are property in the Bible and defilement significantly decreases their value to men.

That's one story.

What about the law in Deuteronomy 22:28-29 stating that if a man rapes a woman, he has to pay the father 50 pieces of silver (yes, a man's daughter is his property) and he is forced to marry her and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

Seriously, please tell me that you don't actually believe this is moral.

Sorry, but only a lunatic would come up with this 'solution'.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Terrifyingly, I have witnessed both Huggy and Drich defending this as "moral", or at the very least, argue that the punishment fits the crime.

Yeah, sadly, I know.

I am fully expecting Huggy to do Olympian levels of mental gymnastics to justify the morality of this.

Suppose I will comment on this, guess I just can't stand prosperity.

Agreed, this story in Deuteronomy is difficult. I would state there is a similar story where the man and a betrothed or married woman do the deed and if it is consensual they are both put to death, if it is not consensual on the woman's part, the man is. This situation would be between two adults and is a warning against adultery.

As for the one Simon cited, it is left for the father to decide if the two are to be married or if the young man is to pay the 50 pcs of silver.

The OT placed the fathers in a position of authority over daughters until marriage. There was a cultural value place upon virgins and a woman that was not considered a virgin could have difficulty in marrying or making her way in life. It was considered a punishment of sorts to make the man marry her and not divorce her for all of his days.

Personally, I would accept 50 pcs of silver, in today's dollars indexed for inflation, from someone that did such an unspeakable act on one of my daughters. It should help with their imminent hospital bills and subsequent funeral.

All of that said I have never seen an instance where this actually took place. Not saying that it didn't, just that I am unaware of any passages in the bible that document such an event.

The missing 11th commandment:

"Women are autonomous human beings, and shall be treated as such."

I guess God didn't think it was that important.
