I'm actually trying to negotiate with USAA so I can get a fairly new Kia or a Hyundai.

I bought a Hyundai, brand new in 2003. I dunno if it's easy to get financed for one, because I just bought mine with cash, but I do know that they're great cars. I drove mine for a year and gave it to my sister when she got her license, and she's still driving it with no problems. It's hot fuchsia.

I liked it! Tongue It matched my nail polish at the time, and I knew I'd never lose it in a parking lot.

Yeah, every "car person" I speak to has nothing but good things to say about their reliability and general awesomeness. As long as something looks respectable, is dependable and has decently affordable repair costs, and possibly has a sunroof (I hate driving in a fishbowl after driving a Wrangler) I'm happy.

Hyundai has Kia beat, but why are you not considering Toyota or Scion?

Me talking to the Hyundai service manager about my 06 Sonata a couple of years ago.

Me, “The carpet in the rear floorboard is factory defective.”
Service manager, “There’s no such thing as factory defective carpet in a 4 year old car. It’s wear.”
Me, “I doubt it because I can count the times someone has been in the back on my fingers. Why don’t you check it out before you make that call?”
Service manager, “OK.” Walks to car, reaches into the rear floorboard, and comes back out with a big handful of carpet fiber. “Huh, factory defective. We’ll replace it.”

Can't speak to Scion but Hyundai beats the shit out of Toyota in the bang for the buck department. At least they did when we were comparing. A Camry with options comparable to the Sonata we bought was 20% more.

Pretty much what Pops says. Didn't even consider Scion. Advice came from people who work on cars, work with cars, etc. I have a guy down here who's going to drive me about this weekend and make sure I don't get fucked over.

I feel steadier now that I've sent out the appropriate e-mails to get the ball rolling, made some phone calls, and eaten just now for the first time since noon.

I was a Honda mechanic for three years. My father is a Porsche/Audi mechanic. Toyota is still as good as it gets. The deals are there to be made, as they all want to sell the goods.
