A study of 788 people in the UK, France and Spain concluded that atheists and agnostics think of themselves as more open-minded than those with faith, but are are actually less tolerant to differing opinions and ideas.

Religious believers "seem to better perceive and integrate diverging perspectives", according to psychology researchers at the private Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Belgium's largest French-speaking university.

Filip Uzarevic, who co-wrote the paper, said his message was that "closed-mindedness is not necessarily found only among the religious".

HA!  (snort)  Religious institutions don't understand "skewed scientific studies" (they don't understand scientific studies at all actually) or "fake news" because religious institutions have BEEN "fake news" for millennia.  They are now confused because people want PROOF.  What?  Their whole system is built on "we said it, therefore it's true".

Doubtful, a more accurate description would most likely be that he believed that the vatican agreed with whatever was falling out of his headholes.  We (and mother church) see time and time again that catholics don't seem to have a solid grasp on what Cathol says.

OP: Ah, this explains their tolerance for clergy pedophilia. Thanks.

Well I see your problem right there, you've decided to read a digital "newspaper" which a few years ago decided to ditch all it's staff and depend on press releases and listicles for its content. It's not yet quite as bad as the HeilOnline but it's getting there.

Does this op strike anyone else as odd?

A theist is accusing atheists of going through the narrow gate, while the theists claim to go through the broad gate.

Well, I think I'll just turn the other cheek. or has that also become a vice when atheists do it?
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

It was always a virtue for the choirboys, hard to see why they'd object.

Oh, wait, you're an adult female. Never mind.

Both sides are extremely close minded, just about different things is all.

I could see the necessity of the church poohbahs fostering some open mindedness in the lead up to the 180 degree course change the church was going to take on divorce/remarriage/adultery.

Having the pew warmers rise up and smite church leaders either for having made them live unnecessarily chaste for so long, or to finally succumbing to Satan's licentiousness, the church's change in dogma could have been quite a violent brouhaha.

As it played out, there was nary a whimper. Curiously, I'm the only one in the country wondering why there wasn't a flag on the play . . .
