There are many different ways for atheists to approach talking to theists. It is almost impossible to know which method, will get through.
Some theists will respond to a soft approach, some will respond firebrand atheists, etc.
As far as Dawkins goes, not sure why you think he is vile? Because of the quote you included about evolution?
Evolution has nothing to do with atheism. There are many Christians (the majority of European Christians, for example) that fully accept evolution.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
