from my experience most of the religious people i've met are tolerant of others. it would be nice if they all did, just as it would be nice if we all did. intolerance is probably equally as natural as supernatural belief, unfortunately.

Yes i really do. Maybe not in my life time sadly..but im sure one day it will. People need to realize that they have a mind, that they are allowed to question there beliefs an dthink more rationaly. I mean why cant they see that? They think that atheist's are crazy or just mean to question and ridecule "God", but all we have done is sat on our asses, (not knees) and thought about it for a while? There afriad of going to "Hell", well guess what we dont believe? I havent been struck by lighting yet? So yeah i do believe it will happen but not until everyone wakes up and realizes that we can use Reason Logic and Common sense to solve problems, insted of praying to a flying fairy in the sky?

When I was an idealistic, bright eyed teenager, I really believed that religion would die out and human society would become non-religious, non-spiritual like the human society was on on Star Trek: The Next Generation. However then I matured into a man, realized the sheer ill-rationality and gullibility of a lot of my fellow human beings. Nowadays I very much doubt that one day all religion will die, alas

If much of religion is driven by direct hardwiring towards god, then that make it more plausible for religion to die out by correlating religion directly to narrow biologically driven behavioral trait that is subject to narrow evolutionary selection pressure.

But I think religion exists not because hardwiring to god per se as susceptibility to uncritical emotional reliance. Uncritical emotional reliance has broader implications than just makes one susceptible to religion. It also has the potential to increase social cohesion through enhanced mutural emotional dependence. So if religion exploits a trait which affords selection advantages outside of religion, then it is harder to visualize why religion would die out.

You reminded me of a line from a song written by an aging southern veteran during the reconstruction-era and speaking of the north.

You just reminded me of how I heard that song for the first time right after the 2004 election. Listening to civil war songs seemed appropriate considering how divided our nation was and still is. I was very shocked and angry that the fundies had so effectively mobilized to re-elect a man who'd lied us into a war. It was enough to make me temporarily suspend all feelings of connection to my own country. It didn't take much for me to write new lyrics to the song to suit my feelings at the time:

Oh, I'm a good old heathen, now that's just what I am.
for this 'Christian nation', I do not give a damn.
I'm glad I fought again' er, I only wish we'd won.
I ain't ask no forgiveness from any godling son.

I hates this 'Christian nation', and everything they do.
I hates their 'holy' Bible and ten commandments too.
I hates their politicians, their hands are drenched in blood.
I hates the bloody crosses, I fit them all I could.

I'd taken up my ballot, they ended up with more.
