Well if you are an agnostic atheist who simply rejects god then it is easy to avoid that burden, it is only when you make a positive claim that you shoulder any burden of proof.

Oops, burden shouldered. Smile Enjoy your time here it is a great place to hang out with cool mix of atheists and theists.

Ok, so I have to shoulder the burden of my claim that when your dead, your dead. I'll give it a shot, but trying to convince this group is about as crazy as "a football bat".

Let's say that I choose to stalk and kill the neighbor's boy for his constant attempts at trying to corrupt my daughter. Lets say that after weeks of planning and preparation I finally get my hands around his throat and strangle the life out of this terd. Lets say that I bury his corpse in my back yard where nobody will even think to look. I'm fairly convinced that I might get away with it. I'm certainly not too worried about his ghost wispering to his mother the story of what happened to him. CSI might catch me but it won't be the one who is dead letting the cat out of the bag.
Now, it is my contention that murderers thoughout time have tested this theory and have not been able to disprove it. "Dead men tell no tales." right? Is that not evidence?

Well how do you know his "spirit" isn't conspiring with the "sky fairy" to plot out a way to send you to "Hell?" Anyway, of course that IS evidence for the rational, but try presenting a Christian with that evidence, and see what response you get. And then ask them what they think about Zeus?

But what if spirits do exist but they can't interact with this world? That would fit your scenario and also go against your conclusion that dead people stop existing.

I'll let you in on a secret, there is no way to falsify this statement: We live on after we die as undetectable spirits forever and ever.

It is just as unfalsifiable as this one: God exists

I as an agnostic simply reject ideas that can't be proven.

Kich, I went to school so long ago that they actually taught us how to spell. Quite an app!

Welcome to the forums, I hope you enjoy your stay.

A spell checker should be on your browser, not the forums, and not be relied on for accuracy.

As often quoted:

“Ode to My Spell Checker.”

Eye halve a spelling checker
It came with my pea sea.
It plainly marks four my revue miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a quay and type a word and weight for it to say
Weather eye yam wrong oar write.
It shows me strait a weigh as soon as a mist ache is maid.
It nose bee fore two long and eye can put the error rite.
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it,
I am shore your pleased to no.
Its letter perfect awl the way.
My checker told me sew.

I've heard that joke before, but it was in the "Englishman, Irishman, and Scotsman" form.

Just one day after joining this forum I have had several realizations.

1. I'm not nearly smart enough to debate most of the people on this forum.
2. I've finally met a community of people who are just as concerned about spelling and grammer as I am.
3. I should not be so worried about how theists will respond. The atheists are bad enough!
4. I'm curiously turned on by the thought of grumpy old Babylonian whores.
5. I can't figure out how to edit my profile. You guys are gonna laugh when you find out where I'm from.
6. I will really like it here.

I know I try to joke too much and this place looks like it can be pretty serious sometimes. I hope I don't come across as someone who isn't interested in logical debate. I guess, like most, I'm looking to find like-minded people to share opinions with. Thank you for your warm welcome.

I'm concerned about the political mess we find our country in today. And I'm also concerned about how we are educating our young people. I'm interested in all discussion, but I seriously think that our country's religious right is going to destroy our concept of freedom.

Speakeasy,

Almost everything I post either is intended for comedic purposes or includes something I think is funny. Yes, it can get serious up in here, but most of us have a decent sense of humor.

Sacred, too!

Quote:We find evidence of sacred prostitution throughout the ancient world, as early as the Gilgamesh Epic of 7000 B.C.E. Herodotus, a Greek historian from the third century B.C.E., wrote:

"...women of the land...sit in the temple of love and have intercourse with some stranger...the men pass and make their choice. It matters not what be the sum of money; the women will never refuse, for that were a sin, the money being by this act made sacred. After their intercourse she has made herself holy in the sight of the goddess..." 1

Sacred prostitution occurred in the early civilizations of Sumer, Babylonia, Egypt, Lebanon, and Rome, and is mentioned in the code of Hammurabi. It also seems to have been common in Europe and the Middle East prior to the rise of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In fact, sacred prostitutes not only existed, they flourished and were held to be important members of society:

"...the sacred prostitutes were many in number. According to Strabo, at the temples of Aphrodite in Eryx and Corinth there were above a thousand, while at each of the two Comanas about six thousand were in residence. They were accorded social status and were educated. In some cases, they remained politically and legally equal to men." 2

Speakeasy

Please try not to be intimidated by the bluff and bluster.

It's arguably true that the average member here is a lot brighter than say the average member on most theist forums. But then, so is Mimi,my obnoxious toy poodle. Most of us are pretty ordinary, with a few startling exceptions;I'm not one of them.

My perception is that people on atheist and free thinker forums often seem a lot brighter than we are because we actually use the brains we have. By that I mean most of us have mastered independent thinking, will question ANYTHING, consciously try to be open minded, and sometimes even say "I don't know" when we don't know. The more evolved among us (usually) decline to take ourselves seriously. (I'm working on it)

Please,do not mistake criticism of something you say as a personal attack. Personal insults are not allowed.

Please do hang around, just be yourself, and have some fun.--this only an internet forum.;albeit one of the better ones.
