Never read the book(s). Only saw the most recent movie with the gay thirst trap (not my type, by the way), but I suppose I just don't see a representation of the social issues I prefer.

dune was great in the sense it pioneered a genera of sci fi that tries to weave large scale social and economic commentaries into the story line, sort of like putting relatable characters into a section of Edward Gibbon’s decline and fall of roman empire that is then projected into a world wearing the troupes of space sci fi.

issac asimov try to do some thing similar years before with the foundation series, but he didn’t know how to create relatable characters and the gimmicks of space sci-fi was still embryonic in the days before sputnik

but soon everyone is doing it and if you take away the original novelty value, then it is not really exceptional,   This can be attested by the fact that much of the duneverse is being carried forward by tripe written by the same guy who also wrote much the Star Wars fan fiction junk, and it is little worse for the wear.

I will confess that I didn't finish the second Dune book, Dune Messiah. Part of that was because I couldn't hold a book for more than a few minutes at that time, the rest was Niven and Pournelle, mostly.

Didn't even get that far

Do you want it?

I have it.

The head, not the book.

That book is the shortest of the six by Frank Herbert, and it ends on an (apparent) downer, but it really lays out the pattern for everything that follows, most importantly the serial Duncan Idahos and the depiction of prescience as a terrible trap.

The world-building.  It approaches the complexity of the Middle-Earth canon.  And it grapples with very deep ideas...the limits of human ability...climate change...how harsh environments mold a society...the consequences of unbridled technological advance (especially in the area of AI)...It's not just another piece of interstellar derring-do.
