The world-building.  It approaches the complexity of the Middle-Earth canon.  And it grapples with very deep ideas...the limits of human ability...climate change...how harsh environments mold a society...the consequences of unbridled technological advance (especially in the area of AI)...It's not just another piece of interstellar derring-do.
Concur. ~55 years later I re-read it and didn't find a serious quibble. Definitely NOT Bullard of the Space Patrol. (My first scifi book. Read it while they were burying JFK. Lordy, it was pulp. Jonny Quest level.)

I always liked Leto II, then Brandon Stark ended up becoming something similar.
And the Bene Gesserit, wish I could be a Bene Gesserit, or at least had genes of interest to them.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Not to mention the harnessing of religious mania for political ends.

If I was rewriting Dune, Alia would have got on much better with her dead grand dad and had a happy ever after.

Then there's the mystery of "Lanville". When the hot pilot comes screaming into the hangars on Caladan he yells for "Lanville", boss mechanic for the Atreides flying things. Bald GI responds.

Then, when the Duke's entourage lands on Arrakis we see Lanville right behind the Duke's family, very senior position.

THEN, when the strategy meeting is held, big boardroom, Lanville is sitting on the Duke's left hand.

Promotion must be FAST with them Atreides.

So did you like the Time Machine 2 novel by Baxter?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
