Dark side of the moon is a classic -- the Great Gig in the Sky being particularly beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zvCUmeoH...re=related

Love the reference above to the Buffy soundtrack -- "I got a theory, that it's a demon; a dancing demon -- no, wait, something isn't right here". Always makes me laugh.

Right, albums. Erm, the original cast recordings of Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd (both Stephen Sondheim), Time Out (Dave Brubeck), Waltz for Debbie (Bill Evans), Basie Live in London (Count Basie Orchestra), Doing it to Death (JBs), Gris-Gris (Dr John), 3 Feet High and Rising (De La Soul), The Jurassic 5 LP (Jurassic 5), The Chronic (Dr Dre), 40oz to Freedom (Sublime), agh, so many... enough, enough.

Vaguely familiar? I honestly never thought anyone could NOT recognise that cover, I mean I knew that album when almost all I liked was dance ... I guess you're just that much younger than me.

I'm 20. I was born around the same time my favourite bands started actually, Orbital, Leftfield, Underworld etc. They all started about 88-90.

It's impossible for me to pinpoint one "favourite" album, so I'll go ahead and talk about a few.

The first album that really got me into music was Metallica's Ride The Lightning. I was about 15 at the time, and became completely obsessed with the band. Back then, I sounded like EvF talking about Orbital. I've grown out of Metallica, but it was my first "favourite" and I can still appreciate a lot of their work.

An album that still surprises me is Incubus's Morning View. I really wouldn't call myself an Incubus fan, and every other album of their's is borderline unlistenable, but this one really struck a chord with me. There are a few throwaway tracks, but the majority of the album bounces around in mood and energy, often resulting in great songs. You have some really laid back melancholy tunes like Mexico and 11am, and then prog-tinged jams like Under My Umbrella. It's just a really great rock album.

An recent album that's earned a top spot in my library is Thom Yorke's The Eraser. I actually don't really have much to say about this album, surprisingly. All I can suggest is that you listen to it on some rainy afternoon, perhaps while reading, or relaxing. I'm sure it'll capture you in the same way it did me.

Orbital did a collaboration with Metallica once you know meatball....the Re-done version of Satan had a remix called 'Satan Spawn' which was what happened when Orbital sent the tape of their song 'Satan' over to Metallica and had Metallica do their thing to it... Kirk Hammett guitars etc....

They also used some of Hammett's Guitars from 'Satan Spawn' on some of their longer Live versions of Satan....

I also like how Metallica have a song called 'Sad But True' and so do Orbital :p

I've heard of Incubus but I forget who's in the band...sounds familar...

And I think Radiohead are totally excellent....I haven't heard Thom's solo albm The Eraser yet though.

I also like Muse for alternative rock or whatever you would classify it as.

Metallica ... most definitely on my list of things to do. I prefer what I euphemistically call "nu-metal" (or "crap" by serious metal fans) but I recognise the historical links and the breakthrough/crossover some bands (like Metallica) have made so I have to listen to them. Sometime I will just create a greatest hits compilation (from various dodgy MP3's) and blitz myself in the car with them ... if I like them I'll buy some CD's.

I like "Admiration" by them (from the soundtrack of "Stealth").

Yeah, I really have to get some Metallica, and I'm a guitarist!

As for Dark Side, well, it speaks for it self. It's pure and simple, a great album.

As for nu metal kyu, which are you into? Something like Limp Bizkit? Korn? Even Linkin Park are little like that.

I always found Incubus hard to get into. I like some of their songs, but found them to be a little 'the same' throughout.

Anyone heard Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley? That's one amazing song.

If I thought it was sarcasm I wouldn't have mentioned it, but I had a sneaky suspicion EvF genuinely did not recognize the album.

Great gig in the sky is awesome live. Katie Kissoon and Sylvia Manson-James do the vocals now on the Roger Waters tour (Katie in 2006 and 2007, Sylvia in 2008 because Katie Kissoon is now touring with Van Morrison) where the whole Dark Side of the Moon album is performed in the second half. I've been to 3 shows of that tour in the last 2 years.

I have it in my collection and play it regularly.

There are worse things to listen to. Smile I'd do the same given half a chance.
