I didn't really think it would go this far down the road. I was making my own observation about some hideous artwork.

Phaedra, I have no problem with you disagreeing with me. That's what we do here. If there was an animosity scale here, it would read ZERO.

In fact, perhaps soon, we could have a discussion about this in the proper forum where we can delve into the ins and outs of the art world. I enjoy hearing other people's point of views ... especially when they are different from my own.

Oh, for pity's sake. I disagreed with your assessment that Cinjin's dislike of Cy Twombly meant he was ignorant of art and art history. It was by no means personal. I am by no means upset or angry. I was simply coming into the new girl thread to strike up a conversation as the only thing worth replying to, apart from your op, had just popped up. If you're going to get butthurt about it, I'll leave it alone. In all honesty, I thought it would make a good conversation, considering conversations are much better when they aren't all "I agree. Fucking kumbayah."

I don't really care whether you like Cy Twombly or not. I was just pointing out that what constitutes art is subjective. Maybe he is a charlatan. Or maybe he's a genius. What a lot of people fail to understand about much of modern art is that the process of creating the art, the materials used, the meaning of the piece, etc are or can be just as important as the finished product. That doesn't mean you have to like the finished piece, but having an understanding of why the artist did what they did helps one to appreciate the art.

Yes, but in the end, the finished product is what is left. It has to be meaningful in and of itself, in my opinion. If you have to hear the story of an artist's life to be able to admire something, it is crap. However, that is just my opinion.

Well, like both of us said, it is subjective. For me, meaning is something that can be derived from looking at a piece of art. You can tell what means upon looking at it, with the obvious exception of random shapes. Meaning, when it comes to art, is also worth, to me. Is it worth looking at once the story gets boring? In your words, aesthetics. It has to play a part or there is no point.

In my opinion, most modern art is crap. Primitives had a better grasp of the fact that pictures needed to convey ideas without a novella about the "art of art" accompanying it. For me, art has been on a decline since the classical period. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a stained shirt somewhere on display as art.
