I believe the gist of it is, a little bit of both. In the U.S., we have redefined both terms and truly utilize neither. No matter what you think the U.S. "is," it isn't because it is destroyed by corruption in politics. It's not a democracy if politicians are flat out lying nor is it a republic. Both terms imply that citizens are the big decision makers -- that each person has a voice. Corruption ruins it. In short, we give the illusion of being an amalgamation of a republic and a democracy but have failed to be either.
